Abstract:
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognizes Shimon Sakaguchi, Fred Ramsdell, and Mary Brunkow for discovering peripheral immune tolerance—the body’s way of preventing the immune system from attacking its own cells. Their work identifying the Foxp3 gene and regulatory T cells (Tregs) transformed how we understand immune balance and diseases like type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. This discovery also opened new paths for treating cancer, chronic inflammation, and improving transplant outcomes.
