Condolence Message

The Breakthrough Science Society (BSS) deeply mourns the passing of Professor Jayant V. Narlikar, a front ranking astronomer and scientist, and a staunch advocate for scientific temper, who left us today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the age of 86.

A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan (2004), Prof Narlikar made significant contributions to astronomy and
cosmology. His pioneering work included the Hoyle-Narlikar theory of cosmology and thoughtful critiques of the Big Bang model, offering as an alternative perspective, the quasi-steady-state theory. As the founding director of IUCAA Pune, he was responsible for nurturing astronomical research and education in India.

Beyond his groundbreaking research, Prof. Narlikar was an excellent and engaging science communicator.
His popular science books, articles, and lectures helped simplify complex scientific concepts for students and laymen, inspiring generations to embrace science confidently. He passionately campaigned against
pseudoscience and unscientific ideas, even conducting controlled experiments to debunk the claims of
astrology. A true champion of science popularization, Prof. Narlikar stressed and encouraged science
communication in regional languages. He took the lead in this exercise, primarily through his prolific writings in Marathi.

Prof. Narlikar’s passing is an irreparable loss to the scientific community in India and globally. The
Breakthrough Science Society extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers. His legacy will continue to illuminate our path as we strive to advance scientific temper and knowledge, a mission he wholeheartedly supported as a member of the Advisory Board and an Honorary Member of the Breakthrough Science Society.
