Annular Solar Eclipse – December 26, 2019

The Annular solar eclipse on 26 December 2019 offered a spectacular sight to people, particularly in those areas in Kerala and Tamil Nadu falling under the totality of the eclipse. The Breakthrough Science Society had made elaborate preparations more than a month in advance to make people aware about this celestial spectacle and help people to view the eclipse safely. Workshops explaining the science behind the eclipse, the ways to view the eclipse safely, to make simple devises like ball and mirror projector, pin hole camera etc  were conducted extensively in schools, colleges and localities in several states. These awareness programs evoked a lot of enthusiasm among the students and the general public. The eclipse provided a great opportunity to take science to the common people in a big way. A booklet in English ‘Observe Annular Solar Eclipse – A Celestial Spectacle’ was published on the occasion. The All India Committee of Breakthrough Science Society made arrangements to assemble safe sun filters using imported black polymer and distributed nearly one lakh filters all over the country.
